Survey Says (Courtesy of Discoveringhair reader - Ashelyn J.):

What did you like most about the product? Well I like using natural/organic products on my hair so this product definitely has that covered. The ingredients are bomb!* It has a thick consistency (which I love) and it leaves my hair feeling very healthy and moisturized. Not to mention the smell–lovely!

What did you like least about the product? Well it’s not the cheapest conditioner and you can only get it at health food/vitamin stores (e.g. Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe) or online. I’ve also heard some people say that it’s not the best detangler but I haven’t detangled with it yet so I don’t know (I’ll detangle with it soon and report back with my results).

What end result were you seeking when you used this product? With my hair type (Type 4a for those who like hair types ), it’s vital that my hair have a lot of moisture and nourishment because it can easily become dry and brittle (and that is not a good look lol). So with AO HSR, I was hoping that it would be a conditioner that REALLY conditioned my hair and helped add moisture and a touchably soft feel.

Did you achieve that goal? Yup, I sure did!

Did you feel that the cost of the product matched the results? Yes, I do think that the cost matched the results.

Would you use this product again? Undoubtedly

Will you add it to your normal hair cocktail? Yup, it’s definitely a keeper and I almost always use it when I wash/co-wash my hair.

How did you use the product? I alternate using it with a 2 other conditioners (AO GPB Conditioner and Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner) when co-washing or deep conditioning. I don’t actually shampoo my hair, but when I use other cleansing products (e.g. Peppermint Castile Soap or Oyin Handmade’s Grand Poo Bar), I usually follow up with the Honey Suckle Rose Conditioner. Sometimes I slather it on in the shower, massage it thoroughly into my hair, throw a plastic cap on, and then rinse (with cool water), while other times I’ll leave it on for about 20-30 minutes, go on about my business, and then rinse it out. I also use a conditioning cap to DC with it for about 15-20 minutes once in a while.

Sheesh.. I’ve been terrible. I got my hair straightened last Thursday with a ceramic straightening brush and a CHI blow dryer. My hair felt PHENOMENAL. I still haven’t relaxed yet! However, I’ve gotten so spoiled by having no new growth, I’ve simply been wrapping and doing nothing more. I have to get back on my regimen this week. I did want to briefly share with you some secrets I’ve learned over the week and tomorrow I’ll get back to business.

I’m not completely anti-heat, I just try to use minimal heat. I haven’t used heat since I had my hair straightened. Here’s a link to the ceramic brush and blowdryer used.

These products combined worked WONDERS. My hair felt relaxed and had tons of body. I may add this to my monthly regimen to help me stretch, but the jury is still out on that one.

Mailbox Mondays have become my ONLY reason for liking Mondays it seems. On Mailbox Mondays, I take your questions and spend ALL week finding the resources you need!

Q: Clairessa - I am currently trying to stretch my relaxers as well. The problem is I don’t really do my own hair so I have to still go to the salon every two weeks. My goal is 10 weeks my last relaxer was August 13. I am trying to learn to take better care of my hair, I also no longer use heat on it, until I go to the salon.

A: Hi Clairessa, I think that’s a problem that most women have, so you certainly aren’t alone. If you’re stretching your relaxer, going to the salon is definitely not a bad thing and quite frankly if you don’t feel comfortable doing your own hair you may want to stay with the salon visits, because stretching your relaxer can be very tricky. I’m trying the recession approach to stretching my relaxers, so I’m going to the salon only for my relaxer (I’m trying to stretch 12 weeks) and for a trim (as needed). The key thing you will want to do is ensure that you talk to your stylist about your hair goal, hair type, what they are using on your hair, and how to maintain your hair on your in-between weeks.

I wanted to share with you a few things I’m doing to help my stretch. Oct. 4th will be 12 weeks and I’m VERY proud of myself. I feel like I could go another 4 weeks potentially, but I’m going to take some pictures and I’d prefer to have that professional touch on my hair.

#1 -No Heat: You are doing the right thing by reducing the heat. I’ve gotten my heat usage down to one day per week for the flat iron (if needed) and one day under the hair dryer weekly, but that’s it!

#2 - Protective Styling: A lot of women think that wrapping your hair is the only way you can “protect” your hair and to that I say..FALSE! I have mastered doing a rollerset on Sunday and wearing my hair curly, once my curls start to fall I pin curl them for a looser curled style, then I normally rock a headband or side braid, finally I resort to wrapping my hair and wearing my hair straight. That regimen can last for 7 - 9 days at some time and the key is.. NO heat! My saving grace is a roller set. It CERTAINLY takes practice to perfect it, but it’s as simple as washing your hair, parting it, applying the rollers, and letting the magic happen!

#3 - Moisture: Make sure that you ask your stylist what she recommends for your hair type, but you’ll want to make sure you are using a daily moisturizer on your hair. It’s important to keep hair moisturized during a stretch to reduce breakage.

#4 - Have Fun: I think it’s vital that you play with your hair and get to know your hair. If you know you have a hair appointment coming up and your stylist will be able to fix anything you mess up.. have fun with it! Try to style it and get to know your hair, you’ll find that with practice you can handle it yourself better than you think! I’m not advising anything drastic like cutting or coloring, just that you get to know your hair, how it handles products, and getting to know what works for you

#5 - Be Resourceful: This is my 1st stretch and I wouldn’t have made it without friends and the internet. There are plenty people experiencing the same challenges you are and you’re not the first one, so get to Googling! I will continue to post my tips and we’ll go through this together.

Keep the questions coming!

She currently has Ojon® Ultra Hydrating Shampoo, Ojon® Ultra Hydrating Conditioner, Ojon® Revitalizing Mist, and Ojon® Hydrating Styling Cream before flat ironing in her cocktail.”This process lasts me a week or more without any further styling. If I am going clubbing or something, I may use the flat iron again but that’s it. 1 hour start to finish, including the shower….” She’s been natural for about 2 years.

Thus far, I’m reading rave reviews about the products.

Pros:

leaves hair very soft

leaves hair feeling very hydrated and moisturized

products aren’t greasy or heavy

98% wildcrafted brand, which means, they use almost all natural products

Cons:

Has a scent - “not unpleasant just potent”

I found a great review and breakdown of ingredients on Amazon.com. Here’s a video review as well:

Most of these reviews are from natural hair people, I’m going to get some and try on my relaxed hair, because I’m really intrigued by the hydration. Of course, I’ll let you know how it goes!

For my recessionistas, the products are available on eBay, Amazon, and I’ve heard that samples are available at Sephora.com.

One of my problem areas is the nape of my neck. When my hair was short, I kept this hair tapered in the back and I have completely damaged it. I can tell that WHEN it grows, it grows a lot slower than the rest of my hair. The top of my hair has started grwing really quicky and is almost covering the nape. Although it will be covered, I still need to focus on this area. After thinking about it, this part of my hair was relaxed more than the rest of my hair and it was most likely the least taken care of because there wasn’t much to “style.” I decided tonight that I’m going to make this a focal point in my hair growth and give it some TLC.

I’m going to see if Dr. Miracle’s is up to the challenge!

I’m a Kardashian fan, but the truth is the truth! Anyhoo, this is a hair blog, so I’ll keep it moving.Khloe Kardashian confirmed on her blog that she is set to wed NBA Star, Lamar Odom, this weekend. “Hi dolls,” the Kourtney & Khloé Take Miami star wrote on her Celebuzz blog Tuesday. “I’m thrilled to finally be able to tell you that the news is true…Lamar and I are getting married on Sunday!!! I couldn’t be happier and I’m so excited that I can finally share the news with all of you.”Your well wishes have meant the world to me and I am truly so blessed to have such amazing fans, family and friends during this incredible time in my life.”

Khloe recently underwent a drastic weight loss.. kudos to her! and she’s been seen on the scene rocking several different hair styles.

Of the looks, I like Khloe as a brunette and I prefer her with the full hair with lots of volume. Pic 1 is nice and really frames her face and brings out her dark, beautiful eyes. I’m actually in LOVE with the 3rd picture and wish she’d go for something more risky like this on an everyday basis. I really this look isn’t an everyday style, but I’d like to see her with something less status quo. Pic 2 is WAY too dark and she practically blends into the background and Pic 4, let’s face it..it’s just too much like Kim and Kourtney for me.

How does Khloe keep her locks so luscious? “I love Kerastase and all of their products. Once a week I use a deep conditioner on my hair by Kerastase because I get my hair done so much. I have naturally curly hair and I always blow it out.” (http://beautyinterviews.com)

Survey Says (Courtesy of Discoveringhair reader - Sabrina D.):

What did you like most about the product? Superior curl definition. I had defined ringlets all over even in the top of my head which tends to be frizzier and lacks curl definition.

What did you like least about the product? The first time I used it I think I used too much because when it dried my hair was crunchy. The second time I tried it I used less product and loved the results.

What end result were you seeking when you used this product? I was looking for a product that would enhance curl definition and provide a soft hold because my hair tends to be frizzy when it dries especially in the top.

Did you achieve that goal? Yes

Did you feel that the cost of the product matched the results? I’m newly natural and haven’t purchased many styling products yet, but I do think it is priced reasonably. I think it’s worth it because a little product goes a long way and more importantly it actually delivers the promised result on the bottle.

Would you use this product again?Yes I would definitely use it again

Will you add it to your normal hair cocktail? I haven’t decided to add it my normal routine yet but I’m seriously considering it.

How did you use the product? There was a demo video on their website. I sectioned my hair into appox 7 sections and finger combed product through hair from root to ends and let it air dry. The only thing I did different from the video was I used a dime sized amount of product per section because when I used the quarter sized amount my hair was hard and crunchy.
